2025 Generative Artificial Intelligence Experiential Course in Primary School

This generative AI experiential course was successfully completed at Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Primary School, providing students with essential AI learning and practical opportunities. It is hoped that after completing this series of courses, students will be able to create works for the school that can be used in a finished product exhibition.

In the new era of AI, the time required for students to develop their ideas and final products has been greatly reduced. Thanks to the assistance of generative AI, it only takes a few minutes to go from a student's written idea to a designed image, video, music, and other works. This technology has a wide range of uses and is suitable for various scenarios that need to showcase learning achievements (school anniversaries, information days, parent-teacher events, etc.).

Our team of instructors has designed a Generative AI course that progresses from basic to advanced, ensuring students have ample time to master and apply what they learn. The four 1.5-hour sessions combine theory and practice to guide students in gradually building their understanding and application of AI. The following is a detailed breakdown of each session:

Section 1: Basic Theory and Initial Experience of Artificial Intelligence

  1. Theoretical Explanation - Initially, the instructor explains the concept of generative AI through practical examples from everyday applications, such as intelligent voice assistants, smart homes, and smart robots. The instructor also explains the core principles of machine learning in an accessible manner, including the differences between supervised and unsupervised learning. The instructor also compares the characteristics of various Large Language Models (LLMs) and briefly introduces the operating principles of Natural Language Processing (NLP), helping students build a comprehensive foundational knowledge base.

  2. In-class activity: Conversation with AI. Students communicate with various chatbots using the POE platform, asking different types of questions and analyzing the AI's responses. This allows students to directly experience the capabilities and limitations of AI, laying the foundation for further advanced learning.

Section 2: Mastering the Skills of Prompt Words

  1. Theoretical Explanation - The Critical Role of Prompts: The instructor provides an in-depth analysis of the core value of prompts and explains the operational process of AI response generation using the "Input-Processing-Output Model." The course emphasizes the three key principles of prompt writing: clarity, context, and format . The course also details the six steps for optimizing prompts.

  2. Classroom Activities - Students apply the learned prompt word techniques to guide AI to generate various academic materials, such as article structure and explanations of scientific concepts. Through hands-on practice, students gain a deep understanding of how to establish effective communication with AI.

Section 3: Multimedia Content Production

  1. Theoretical Explanation - Skill Review and Extension: The instructor helps students review the cue word techniques from Section 2 and demonstrates how to apply these methods to different types of AI creation tools.

  2. The class activity, "From Text to Image," was particularly inspiring for students to engage in creative work. Using the text generated in the second session, students used AI image generation tools to create images, which they then transformed into animated videos. This creative process fully demonstrated the potential of AI in the field of artistic creativity, and the students were enthusiastically engaged.

Section 4: Knowledge Integration and Innovative Application

  1. Theoretical Explanation - Intelligent Use of AI: Instructors guide students in considering how to use AI tools wisely, including understanding the boundaries of AI capabilities, identifying AI-generated content, cultivating critical thinking, and developing responsible AI usage habits. The instructor emphasizes that AI is an auxiliary tool, not a substitute, and encourages students to maintain creativity and independent thinking.

  2. Classroom Activity - Using POE's app creator function, students worked in groups to develop simple HTML games, integrating AI technology with programming to unleash their creative potential. Finally, we also conducted interactive knowledge review using Kahoot to reinforce the key learning points from the first three sessions in a gamified way.
