The Office of the Communications Authority hosted its third "5G Campus Application Creation Competition" this year. The INSPIRE® Education Team was invited by the Hong Kong Productivity Council to organize this drone operation training course, providing professional drone operation instruction to the 10 secondary school teams that had advanced to the finals.

This approximately three-hour workshop covered two core areas of drone operation: theoretical knowledge explanation and practical hands-on experience. The course was closely aligned with the theme of "low-altitude economy," and through easy-to-understand teaching methods, it aimed to help students fully grasp the practical applications of drone technology and stimulate their interest and potential in technological innovation and future economic development.

Workshop Sections
At the beginning of the workshop, instructors first explained the basic concepts of drones to the students. As technology advanced rapidly, our curriculum was also continuously innovating. The teaching content for drones was no longer limited to the application of aerial photography equipment. In class, we introduced various types of drones, especially innovative designs that could be combined with traditional machinery, such as liquid spraying systems, lifting devices, robotic arms, etc. Through diversified teaching, students not only acquired more comprehensive knowledge but also broadened their horizons and inspired their imagination for future drone technology applications.

In addition, instructors also incorporated drone safety courses into the curriculum as per the organization's requirements. The course content was fully formulated with reference to the relevant regulations and guidelines of the Civil Aviation Department, ensuring teaching quality and safety. We taught students about the different requirements for operating drones based on the Civil Aviation Department's drone licensing system, including maximum flight altitude, operating hours, restricted flight areas, and other important regulations. Through this knowledge, students in designing their competition entries, could more effectively implement their creativity into real-world scenarios, making their works not only innovative but also compliant with social application and safety standards.

Workshop Core: Drone Experience
In this workshop, the instructor team carefully prepared two drone models, Tello Talent and DJI Neo, as experiential teaching materials and designed several challenging levels for students to gradually explore drone operation skills according to different difficulties. Activities included using Tello for fixed-point circling flights and flying over obstacles, testing students' control precision and reaction capabilities. The DJI Neo was equipped with FPV goggles, allowing students to instantly view the footage captured by the drone from a first-person perspective, providing an immersive experience as if flying in the sky themselves, further enhancing the fun and realism of learning.
Summary
In this workshop, the INSPIRE® Education Team, through a curriculum design that combined theory and practical operation, allowed students to gain an in-depth understanding of drone technology and its applications in the "low-altitude economy." In the workshop, students not only mastered operation skills and safety regulations but also stimulated their creativity and spirit of exploration through challenging tasks and immersive experiences. Seeing students actively participate, bravely try, and demonstrate their enthusiasm for technological innovation made the team deeply gratified and encouraged!
