Generative AI Application Workshop: Ancient Costume Dressing Experience
 

Travel through time and space to experience the beauty of Chinese clothing

We will utilize AI photography and clothing recognition technology to provide participants with an interactive experience where they can "put on" traditional Chinese clothing from the Qin and Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Simply standing in front of the camera, participants will instantly receive a unique photo (digital or printed) in period costume, accompanied by detailed historical background information about the clothing of the corresponding dynasty.

Background Information: Dunhuang clothing is not simply the Han clothing of a single dynasty, but rather a fusion of diverse civilizations, including Central Plains Han culture, Indian Buddhist art, Persian influences, Sogdian ornamentation, and Mesopotamian color concepts. This is particularly evident in the clothing of Buddhist bodhisattva figures, apsaras, and donors. Dynamic and flowing forms, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on flowing lines are the defining characteristics of Dunhuang clothing.

Experience Highlights
  • Enhance cultural understanding of Chinese clothing

By observing and experiencing the look of Hanfu themselves, students will gain a deeper understanding of the evolution and cultural background of Chinese historical clothing. This process will not only allow them to appreciate ancient aesthetics and craftsmanship, but also allow them to appreciate the religious beliefs and diverse ethnic cultures underlying clothing, deepening their appreciation and respect for their own culture.

  • Promoting multicultural identity

By exploring the clothing of different dynasties, students can observe the fusion of Chinese elements with Indian, Persian, and other cultures, thereby understanding how diverse cultures have intersected, merged, and coexisted throughout history. This experience helps cultivate students' international perspectives and cultural tolerance, fostering a sense of identity that respects differences and appreciates diversity.

  • Demonstrate the application of AI technology in education and cultural promotion

Combining generative AI technology with the theme of historical costumes, students can personally "dress" themselves in clothing from different dynasties, further reflecting on the potential and responsibility of AI in artistic creation and cultural communication. Through hands-on experience, students will understand how technology serves as a vital bridge for cultural education and be inspired to use AI for more innovative and engaging creative expression.

  • Enhance students' digital literacy and cultivate cross-cultural communication skills

  • Collect student feedback through on-site participation and interactive questionnaires to continuously optimize activities

  • Two display screens (for event presentations and explanations)

  • 2-4 photo printers

  • A webcam (for AI headshots)

  • Basic stationery

  • 4 staff members (2 to guide students in inputting commands, 2 to assist with photo printing and equipment management)
